this year proved to be a beautifully interesting year with many surprises along the way. of course, some were good and some were bad, but not if you believe that all things must be, for a reason. i hope like me, you're glad to have seen and been given all that 2011 had to offer. good ol' friend- we'll never forget you.

i'm so lucky to have the good love of family and friends to keep me moving and inspired to work. life and work is one: without every person, speck of dust, song, sigh, dirty puddle or email attachment- i would not have been able to create so freely and abundantly.

thank you to all who have believed in and given me their precious time this year, in any and every possible way.

though often on different paths, we are in it together. we all want the same things, to be happy and loved. i wish you all these simple, but lasting truths for the coming year. 2012 might be the end of it all- so let's put our best foot forward, live our biggest dreams and go out with a bang ;). be safe and merry.

my first time in europe in a decade, and my very first european solo show ended up being a great deal more exciting and successful than i could have ever anticipated. the opening had a nice turnout and people were very engaging- it was nice to hear the perspectives of art and life outside of north america. amsterdam as a city itself was alive and beautiful. it was refreshing to walk around and the weather happened to be the best. i was really impressed by the history and culture- and the trams.

i returned to toronto on friday night after a seven-hour flight and being delayed at the gate at schipol for an extra 90 minutes. it ended up being more fun than it sounds. mind over matter, my friends- i was not bored or angry, but rather amused. travelling will always teach you something new.

a great big thank you to robbert and willy of jaski art gallery for being so gracious and taking care of me throughout the entire process leading up to the show and during my stay. thanks also to the gallery crew, the new friends i met, nate, sean and my good friends amanda and joe for coming all the way from this side of the world and meeting me there. thanks for all the support and good wishes from you guys on the internets, it still means a lot.

this year has flown by so quickly. it felt like i confirmed this show just a few weeks ago.
but here it is, all grown up, turned- like a child, like the season.

the dying wishes, is a show of all new work and some small drawings.
if you are in, or around amsterdam at this time, come by and say hi.

so stands the striving plant that has become a memory of a moment.
now, quite a bit taller, it's lost many of its leaves in the process of growing.
there is jazz back and forth, through the window that frames the portal between outside secrets and drunken interior.
looking through it, or even, being by it- a voice starts.
it will usually tells tales of lands with tall grass, interviewing skies and the cries of beasts only known in the spirit.
sometimes, it will just tell you to listen, then say nothing. but not nothing.

Giant Robot Magazine has been a great part and support in my career thus far- and i know a big influence on the way many contemporary artists and galleries work.
i was asked and am honoured to participate alongside a list of influential contemporaries in the GR2 benefit- ROBOTS.
hope you can show some support for some pioneers and an ever-evolving vision of culture through spreading the word for this show or maybe even buying some art.

Giant Robot will host a “special” art exhibition for the benefit of Giant Robot 2 – the gallery space.

Giant Robot 1 retail space began art exhibitions including Ai Yamaguchi and kozyndan. The space was limiting and art as we know it today was a limited world that was just beginning to bubble.

Opening in 2003, Giant Robot 2 or “GR2″ has hosted exhibitions by well known, soon to be well known and new young artists. The first exhibition in the space was by renown artist David Choe. Following exhibitions included Saelee Oh, Deth P. Sun, kozyndan, Barry McGee, Souther Salazar, Eishi Takaoka, Masakatsu Sashie, and many others who exhibit at many locations around the world. We’ve since worked with new waves of artists who’ve also moved forward at a rapid pace as well. Then yet another wave, and so forth. Giant Robot 2 has often and free exhibited young artists at an expense. In the end, who pays for the promotion, rent, staffing, etc? We do.

We’re not like many other establishments who force artists into contracts. We try and nurture artists so they can have their freedom. At times it works well. Our track record is powerful. But again, how does this get paid for? The hindering economy leaves us with less options, and a benefit show featuring our artist friends will carry us for a healthy amount of time and we hope to have your support. The goal for GR2 is for the space to be self sustaining as an art space in 2012 and on. We’ll release more news on our plans, soon.

about a week ago, i settled into a new place. it's a bigger space and gives me a bit more room to step back from my paintings.
there's also a bit more room for band practices and general pop + locking.

the first mash-up was last night, with two smarty-artys, paddy leung and peter chan.

we had a chance to explore parallel worlds and melt our realities. it's always great to jazz it.

a few nights ago, i had a conversation with a friend over dinner and we talked about poetry, life and making art. we talked about making the mark that makes each moment momentous.

it's always a weird thing, when you know something, understand it, but it takes on a different life when realized in a good conversation- the words in the air, released to the world. that moment, you can't help but phase out of the conversation for a second because things just came together in a way you always knew, but not in that way. my friend is a writer, but the beauty of art is that it transcends mediums- even, as i'm realizing more and more, what we traditionally call the arts.

sorry if i've ever phased out of a conversation with any of you, but take it as a compliment.

i meant to write something meaningful to you, but in the last second i lost it.

time is so precious in that things so quickly change. age- within seconds, ideas flip, shift and disappear. though most the words in my mind appear in rhythm, as in a haiku or a verse, mostly they never see life. when they sometimes do, they dissolve like the usual worries of future that only return too soon in other forms.
there is something reassuring in that.

you are the best for believing in something so fragile, as most only want to have something solid in their hands- maybe at best, yearning for the feeling of the sand sifting through their fingers, but never the emptiness that follows. you know that that is after all, a part of it.

as the sea beckons.

in the middle of the night you will think, it is probably time to go to bed soon,
then you hear the screeching of rusty bicycle brakes and cars zooming by outside.
you imagine the people inside, coming back from their summer parties, seeing families, picking up a friend- having arguments in the early morning.

foooooooooooooo, the fan drones- almost as if to tell you all the most ancient and simple truths of your everyday, waking, walking life.
and though you try to listen hard, you're cut by the sound of another speeding car and the spirited cackle of boisterous, young folk celebrating a birthday or erasing bad memories.

you think of your old friends, and the one you saw bike past you today. he looked much different, but not all that much, really.
you think about how much you've changed. if people would recognize you, if anyone ever does or will.

the sweat on your chest and your melancholy linger like friends.
are there really patterns? i want to take a million photos, draw a million drawings and send them to a million people, then they will know sadness like me.

i was invited to live paint with some talented folks as part of the night it up festival that happens every summer.
this year it happens at the markham civic centre lot on saturday, july 16 from 1-6pm, come say hi and get paint splashed on your new clothes.
there will be a ton of great food vendors as well- a great weekend overall.
